The Hatchery

The Hatchery is a unique and rustic wedding venue located on a deserted prawn farm in a coastal reserve on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, less than 90 minutes’ drive from Durban. The timeworn buildings, dunes dressed in long grasses, stunning Amatikulu lagoon and sandy beach just down a winding sandy path, combine together to offer a range of beautiful backdrops for your wedding photos.

The wedding venue offers a ceremony deck, or alternately a ceremony on the dunes with views of the lagoon, sea, and reserve, and a ‘blank canvas’ reception area where you can let your imagination run wild.

The prawn farming history of the facility was kept in mind when converting the facility as many of the buildings look exactly the way they did all those years ago when the hatchery was still operational.  The result is a quirky and rustic wedding venue that offers a blend of comfort and timeless ‘cool factor’ within an idyllic setting that feels a million miles away from civilisation.

The Hatchery can accommodate up to 150 guests at the wedding reception, with 50 beds on the property catering for overnight guests.  The surrounding villages of Mtunzini and Zinkwazi offer ample accommodation options for overflow guests.

Venue hire fees start at R10 000 for smaller weddings (up to 30 people). For larger weddings, the venue hire is R17500 (up to 100 guests).
