Umngazi Hotel and Spa

Coastal bliss

At the mouth of the Umngazi River on South Africa’s Wild Coast, Umngazi Hotel & Spa is a special place for couples who want their time together to feel a little different. Surrounded by coastal forest, river and sea, it’s a place where the days naturally slow down and there is plenty of space to simply enjoy being together.

Located around 20 km south of Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape, Umngazi is particularly popular for honeymoons, anniversaries, milestone celebrations and romantic getaways.

Accommodation ranges from comfortable Garden and River View rooms to Sea-Facing rooms and a selection of adults-only suites. The Honeymoon Suites offer extra privacy, sea views, fireplaces and access to the private Emlonyeni lounge and pool, while the Ntabeni Spa Suites sit high on the hillside with panoramic views and golf-cart transfers.

Life at Umngazi is wonderfully uncomplicated. Rates include accommodation and three meals a day, leaving couples free to spend their time swimming, walking the beach, taking a river cruise, enjoying the spa or simply finding a quiet spot to watch the view. Special touches can also be arranged for honeymoons and celebrations, and couples can choose from packages designed specifically for romantic stays.

What makes Umngazi distinctive is the combination of an extraordinary natural setting with genuinely warm, personal hospitality. It is relaxed rather than formal, with the Wild Coast itself providing much of the atmosphere.

Umngazi is a destination rather than a quick stopover, and the journey is part of the experience. Couples should allow time to settle in and enjoy a few days rather than rushing through a one-night stay. There is also no Wi-Fi in individual rooms, which suits couples who are happy to switch off, reconnect and make the most of their time together.
