One of the really fun aspects of your wedding-planning is planning your honeymoon. Discuss with your partner the kind of vacation you’d both enjoy, what your budget is and organise it accordingly.

There is no such thing as the ‘right’ place to go because every couple has different preferences and ideas.  For some, it may mean an all-inclusive beach or mountain resort while for others it may be going on safari or hiking through forests.

South Africa is rated amongst the top 10 honeymoon destinations in the world. With its great diversity, moderate climate and numerous romantic getaways, there are some fantastic destinations that are easily accessible and affordable. Here are a few useful tips to consider when planning your honeymoon:

Save ahead of time.

Start a separate account and commit to saving every month. Put any unexpected income into this fund and you’ll get excited as you see it grow. You could keep this special account after your honeymoon to save for future holidays or special occasions together. As a gift idea, you could suggest your wedding guests contribute towards your honeymoon.

Simplify the process.

Fully inclusive packages often offer the best deals and can also make the honeymoon planning process easier. Make sure you know what is included so you are not hit with unexpected expenses such drinks, spa treatments or game drives. Let the destination know ahead of time that you are ‘honeymooners’ – you might be pleasantly surprised at the special treatment you receive.

Book early.

This often ensures you get the best rates. The ideal time to travel will depend on your destination but aim to go in the shoulder season. This is when everything is open but not at peak tourist prices.

Select accommodation wisely.

You don’t have to stay in the most expensive room to have a great time. Choosing a garden or pool facing room instead of the most expensive ocean facing room could make a huge difference in your overall honeymoon spending. Instead of insisting on a five-star hotel, choose one that’s less expensive but still has lovely rooms. Or stay in a five-star hotel but downgrade your room and you’ll have more to spend on dining out or activities.

Remember, plan ahead, spend wisely, make the most of every day. You will return with many wonderful memories and no worries about paying off your holiday of a lifetime.
