WILDFLOWERS & WHIMSY | A Marriage Meander styled shoot

Set amongst the manicured lawns, pretty gardens, dam views and natural forests of Bushwillow Park in the beautiful Karkloof, 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒇𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒔 & 𝑾𝒉𝒊𝒎𝒔𝒚 was all about embracing the beauty that was already there.

The brief? A little wild, a little whimsical and wonderfully relaxed.

Think meadow-inspired florals, soft colours, pretty details, colourful cocktail tables, umbrellas on the lawn, delicious little bites and a couple who look like they’re having the absolute best time. 🌼

More than anything, we wanted to show that a rustic, nature-filled venue doesn’t need extravagant styling to feel magical. With thoughtful details and a little creativity, even a simple backdrop can become something beautifully romantic and completely your own.

And perhaps my favourite part? This shoot was created around the idea of a daytime wedding. Because who says weddings have to start at 3pm?

Imagine a long lunch, a garden high tea, cocktails and canapés on the lawn or a relaxed picnic-style celebration surrounded by nature. ☀️

That balance is part of what makes the venue so appealing. You arrive easily, but once you are there, the estate feels peaceful, green, and far more tucked away than you would expect. For couples wanting a nature-connected wedding without heading deep into the Midlands, Hills Wedding Estate offers a very practical answer.

The venue itself has been purpose-built for weddings, which comes through in the flow of the spaces. The chapel, with its vaulted ceilings and exposed trusses, gives the ceremony a warm, architectural focal point, while the reception hall accommodates up to 200 guests and lends itself well to larger celebrations. There are also lush outdoor garden areas for ceremonies, pre-drinks, and photographs, giving couples flexibility in how they plan the day.

Hills Wedding Estate has been created with a deep sense of care for the land itself and a strong environmental awareness. The indigenous gardens, eco-conscious systems, and occasional wildlife sightings all add to the atmosphere. VENUE SPOTLIGHT | In the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and closely connected to the much-loved Piggly Wiggly Country Village, @highgatewine offers couples the chance to get married at a family-run wine estate with its own vineyard, cellar story, and distinctive atmosphere. Highgate is known for its boutique wines, good food, warm hospitality, and wedding spaces with real character.

For the ceremony, there are a few lovely options. You can say your vows in the Atrium, a covered indoor garden space, in the Tasting Room for something more intimate, or outdoors overlooking the vineyard.

The main reception space is full of character: a red-brick venue with oak barrels, polished wood floors, chandeliers, and a warmth that grounded and refined. It accommodates up to 85 guests, while the Atrium and Tasting Room each suit celebrations of up to 40 guests. The vineyards, pine forest, and dam offer beautiful photo backdrops.

Food is a real part of the venue’s appeal too. Catering comes exclusively from The Restaurant at Highgate Wine Estate, which makes sense given how strongly food and wine sit at the heart of the family business. Couples speak warmly about the meals and the genuine welcome they still receive when they return.

For newlyweds and couples wanting to stay close by, there are three private restored farmhouse suites at @highgatecountryguesthouse with views of iNhlosane Mountain and the vineyard.

Highgate is beautiful without feeling overdone. The vineyard, red brick, ambient lighting, Nguni cattle near the dam, pine forest, and tasting spaces give the venue texture without trying too hard.

I'll always love the pretty part of a styled shoot... 🌸but honestly, I think I *might* love the behind-the-scenes even more. 😂

Because a beautiful wedding editorial isn't just the final photographs. It's the people, the ideas, the styling, the problem-solving, the little bits of chaos and all the moments in between that somehow come together to create the magic.

Wildflowers + Whimsy was our recent styled shoot at Bushwillow Park in the KZN Midlands, bringing together an incredibly talented team of local wedding suppliers to create something a little dreamy, a little wild and very much inspired by the beauty of the setting.

VENUE SPOTLIGHT | Set in the Midlands near Howick, @haycroftfarm is the kind of venue where the setting is part of the day at every turn — from the ceremony spaces to the deck, the terrace, and the stay beyond.

That starts with the ceremony. Couples can choose between the pine forest chapel, where wooden benches sit beneath the trees and up to 180 guests can gather under the canopy, and the country farm chapel, where glazed front windows look out across the dam and forest and seating for up to 160 guests. One is softer and more tucked away. The other feels open and light-filled. It is a strong choice to have, and one that gives couples two genuinely different spaces to say “I do!”.

Haycroft keeps the momentum going beautifully. The wooden deck on the edge of the dam creates an easy setting for canapés and sundowners, while the reception venue, accommodating up to 180 guests, opens onto a grassed terrace with a secluded fire pit beyond. There is something especially appealing about the way the venue moves from water to terrace to celebration space without losing the view.

It also helps that the guest stay has been thought through so well. Haycroft sleeps up to 72 guests on-site, with the Bridal Barn for the bride and her people, a dedicated Groom’s Quarters, a private honeymoon suite, and shared areas like The Clubhouse that make the weekend feel social before the wedding has even begun..

For couples wanting a Midlands wedding venue with a strong sense of flow, beautiful ceremony choices, and the kind of stay that keeps everyone connected, Haycroft Farm offers something very easy to picture yourself in.

VENUE SPOTLIGHT | For couples looking for a Midlands wedding venue with stylish interiors, beautiful grounds, and a team known for helping the day run smoothly, @harringtonhousekzn offers a setting with both polish and freedom.

Set on 7.5 hectares of farmland just off the N3 on Hilton College Road, Harrington House offers couples that sought-after balance of convenience and country calm. The setting is one of landscaped gardens, sweeping lawns, magnificent trees, and beautiful Midlands scenery.

The main reception venue is classic in feel, but still fresh and stylish. It seats up to 100 guests inside and up to 140 when the verandah is included. The custom-made bar, blown-glass lights, solid wooden floors, white beams, fireplace, and verandah steps leading down onto the lawns all give the space that is warm and welcoming. It is easy to picture drinks on the verandah, guests spilling onto the grass, and the celebration moving comfortably between indoors and out.

For larger weddings, there is a dedicated marquee site that can accommodate up to 400 guests, complete with elegant bathrooms, wheelchair access, ample parking, and generator support.

For ceremonies, there is a lovely option that gives the venue its own distinct personality: the space beneath the magnificent chestnut tree, where couples can exchange vows or host canapés under its sweeping branches.

Couples speak glowingly about Jen and the team, particularly their flexibility and calm support. Which means that Harrington House is not only a beautiful setting, but also a venue where couples enjoy flexibility around their own layout, guest flow, and priorities.

With self-catering accommodation for up to 18 guests, including a complimentary bridal suite, there is also the option of keeping family and special friends close.

The chapel was originally built as a Methodist chapel and recently renovated with new stained-glass windows. It gives couples a ceremony space with real history behind it — not in a grand or imposing way, but in a way that feels personal and meaningful.

Glen Eden Lodge is best suited to celebrations of 14 to 50 guests. There is room to gather the people closest to you, settle into the gardens and lodge spaces, and celebrate in a way that feels more connected and less stretched across a long guest list. Outdoor ceremonies are also an option, so couples can choose between the restored chapel and the surrounding grounds depending on the mood they want for the day.

Accommodation for up to 14 guests adds to the appeal of Glen Eden, especially for couples wanting to share their wedding weekend with those closest to them. With individually decorated suites, a two-bedroom stone cottage, and the Chapel Room, the property lends itself naturally to a smaller group stay.
